Morning Calm

Saturday, February 7, 2015

Grunts and groans, feet shuffling (slowly), and then a beep. These are the first sounds I make each morning as I make my way to the coffee pot. That is always my first destination. So what if I have to go to the bathroom? Turning on the coffee pot comes first!

Once I have my coffee, I am a morning person. I love sitting around in my robe, sipping that delectable, percolated goodness! ;) This morning, I am sitting here drinking my coffee, candle lit, and listening to the "Thunderstorm" playlist on Spotify. The only lights are the glow coming from the kitchen, my candle, and my laptop screen. This is my calm and very happy place.

A lot of people race through their mornings. They wake up with just enough time to get ready, flying through their shower, getting dressed, and breakfast (if they take the time to eat one). They hate mornings and find them miserable... and for good reason.

The thing is, mornings can be so enjoyable, if you find something that works for you. Everyone knows that my mornings = good coffee and calm, but that won't be what works for everyone. Some people will feel relaxed  by starting the day with yoga, while others may want to start off in a long, hot shower. Some people will want to sip tea instead of coffee, or will want to skip the beverage and go straight to food.

Regardless of what you find relaxing, the key is giving yourself time. No matter how tired I am in the mornings, I always give myself 45 minutes more than I need in order to have a little morning calm. This way, I'm not rushing around in the morning, just barely making it. By the time I have to start getting ready for my day, I've already been sitting, waking up, and have had my favorite treat. This makes for a much more relaxing, happy start to the day.

I highly recommend trying this. It will be difficult at first; especially if you aren't naturally a morning person. However, after you give your body time to adjust, I think you will really find this change rewarding.

You do, however, need to make sure that you adjust your bed-time accordingly. If you are going to be getting up 30-45 minutes earlier than you are use to, then you need to go to bed 30-45 minutes earlier as well. You aren't going to be benefited by this routine if you cut out the sleep your body needs.

So give it a try. Decide what would make you happy in the morning (besides sleeping) and do it. Get into this routine and I feel confident you will find it much easier than you thought to be a morning person. And I have a feeling you will learn to enjoy it!

    1. Haha. I am sometimes, but once I get in a routine, I really enjoy getting up. I think it's just the fact that it I'm getting up early, I have time to consciously relax, and that makes me happy.
